Dr. Franklyn H. Geary, Jr., a native Atlantan, attended M. Agnes Jones Elementary School and Northside High School of the Atlanta Public School System. He received a BA degree in Chemistry from Emory College of Emory University. While at Emory, he was actively involved in several organizations including Mortarboard, Omicron Delta Kappa Honor Society, Pi Alpha Chemical Fraternity, Eta Sigma Phi Latin Fraternity, the Black Student Alliance, and the Emory Senior Society (DVS). He was elected in Who's Who Among American Colleges and Universities. He is a Charter Member of the first Black Greek Organization on the Emory University Campus, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated founded March 27, 1976.
Dr. Geary earned his medical degree from Emory University School of Medicine. While at Emory, he was instrumental in restarting the Student National Medical Association Chapter at Emory. After graduation, he attended the Emory-Grady Affiliated Residency Training Program in Gynecology and Obstetrics at Grady Memorial Hospital. Upon completion of residency in 1984, Dr. Geary joined the Emory Gyn/OB faculty at Grady. He was Co-Director of the junior clerkship, Director of the Gyn/OB Emergency Room, and Quality Assurance Director for the Gyn/OB Department. In 1991, Dr. Geary decided to advance his obstetrical and pursued fellowship in Maternal Fetal Medicine at Emory.
Upon completion of fellowship in 1993, Dr. Geary joined Morehouse School of Medicine in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology as Associate Professor, Division Director of Maternal Fetal Medicine, and Chief of Service at Grady Memorial Hospital. He served as Interim Chair of the Department from 1998 to 2001. One of Dr. Geary's most outstanding accomplishments was being instrumental in establishing the residency-training program in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Morehouse School of Medicine; he graduated his first group of residents in 2001; he was the Residency Program Director for 22 years.
Dr. Geary has participated in numerous medical school committees, including the admissions committee, ad hoc committee on harassment in the workplace, and was a Faculty Representative to the Board of Trustees. Dr. Geary has received numerous awards and honors including: the "Pimp Daddy Award" for teaching, Dean's Award for service, Morehouse School of Medicine Certificates of Appreciation for Student Development (1999), "Young Physician of the Year Award" by the Atlanta Medical Association (1999), Grady Health System Department of Multicultural Affairs Language Interpretative Services Certificate of Appreciation (2009), induction into to the Morehouse School of Medicine Chapter of Alpha Omega Alpha (2002), Nelson McGhee Faculty Leadership Award (2006), CREOG National Faculty Award (2007), NMA OBGYN Service to the Section Award (2010), the Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award (2014), Ladies and Gentleman of the White Coat Society (2014), Recognition for 20 and 25 years of service to Morehouse School of Medicine, and Grady Health Foundation Pillar of Excellence Award (2016). He had the honor of being the Grand Marshall of the 35th Morehouse School of Medicine Commencement in 2019 and Convocation Speaker that same year. Recently, Dr. Geary was named as one of Atlanta's Top Doctors in 2022.
Dr. Geary is currently Associate Dean for Admissions and Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Morehouse School of Medicine. He is double boarded in General Obstetrics and Gynecology and in Maternal Fetal Medicine. He served as the MSM OB/GYN Chief of Service at the Grady Health System for over 28 years and was the Vice Chair of the OB/GYN Department. He is a past Chair of the OB/GYN Section of the National Medical Association.
He has published articles in his interest on domestic violence and medical complications of pregnancy and been an invited speaker to various local, regional, and national conferences. He credits his mother for his love of teaching and his father for his compassion. Last, but certainly not least, he is the proud father of the love of his life, his daughter Erin.
